Dr. Fernando Pereira is the Head of the Department of Surgery at the University Hospital of Fuenlabrada, Madrid, Spain, since 2004, when the hospital was inaugurated. Since then he has been mainly dedicated to HBP and Oncologic surgery, directing one of the two most active Peritoneal Surface Malignancies Units in Spain. Previously, he worked for 15 years at the Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro, also in Madrid, where he was especially dedicated to HBP surgery and liver transplantation.
Dr. Pereira is the current President of the Spanish Society of Oncologic Surgery (SEOQ), affiliated to the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO). He has been a member of its Board of Directors since 2017 and was Coordinator of the Spanish Group of Peritoneal Oncological Surgery (GECOP) and of the Peritoneal Oncological Surgery section of the Spanish Association of Surgery (AEC) from 2019 to 2022.
He is the promoter and director of the GECOP National Registry, launched in 2020, and is currently the promoter and principal investigator of the GECOP-MMC phase IV clinical trial, started in 2022, which aims to elucidate the role of HIPEC with MMC in peritoneal metastases from colon cancer.
He is the author of 166 scientific articles, 657 communications in national and international courses, has directed 11 doctoral theses, and since 2010 is Professor of Surgery at Rey Juan Carlos University, Madrid.
He also has extensive experience in Humanitarian Aid, having been responsible for the annual surgery campaigns of the non-governmental organization “Zerca y Lejos” in Bengbis, Cameroon, from 2010 to the present, and additional campaigns in Kinshasa, Congo, since 2022.
His main professional and scientific interests focus on HBP and Oncological surgery, with special dedication to Peritoneal Surface Malignancies.
