Dr. Eric Rullier, MD, PhD, FASCRS, is Chairman and Professor of Surgery for the Colorectal Unit within the Department of Surgery at Saint-André Hospital (Bordeaux, France). Due to his extensive expertise in the field, he serves as Chairman for Education in General Surgery in France (South section). Proof of his expertise in the field lie in his numerous publications as author or co-author in renowned scientific journals and his participation on more than 300 conferences. In 1991, Dr. Eric Rullier, MD, PhD, FASCRS graduated in digestive surgery and as a consultant surgeon in colorectal surgery from the University of Bordeaux in 1995. Dr. Rullier is a board member of several medical societies across Europe: he belongs to the Educational and Research Boards of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP), and he is a member of the Publication Committee of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES). In 2005, Dr. Eric Rullier founded the GRECCAR (Groupe de REcherche Chirurgical du Cancer Rectal) to develop innovative research in rectal cancer at a national level. In 2015, he also co-founded PELVICARE at Bordeaux Foundation University, to develop the Bordeaux Colorectal School, and is Director of European courses and Masterclasses for TME and colorectal surgery. Regarding his work in research, Dr. Rullier developed clinical research in rectal cancer. His main research topics focus on low rectal cancer, sphincter and organ preservation, and minimally invasive surgery. He demonstrated the oncologic safety of the intersphincteric resection technique and participated in the European development of laparoscopic surgery in rectal cancer. He also proposed a classification of low rectal cancer to standardize surgery and facilitate sphincter preservation.
