Dr. Fiona R. Kolbinger is a Research Assistant Professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University and holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science at Indiana University. Prior to this, she was a surgical Clinician Scientist at Dresden University of Technology in Germany.

Dr. Kolbinger completed her medical training at the University of Heidelberg School of Medicine in Germany and obtained her doctorate from the German Cancer Research Center. She then pursued a surgical residency at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden and conducted research in the field of Surgical Data Science at the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden, Germany.

Dr. Kolbinger's research focuses on computational approaches to extract actionable knowledge from clinical datasets in surgery. Her efforts aim to translate technological innovations, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), into clinically valuable tools for medical decision support and surgical training. Specifically, her work has centered on AI-based intraoperative guidance for surgical quality control, automated identification of anatomical risk and target structures, and preoperative complication risk and outcome stratification in patients undergoing major surgery. Her overarching goal is to drive the clinical translation of AI-based tools in surgery and ultimately improve patient outcomes through more tailored interdisciplinary treatment approaches.
