Dr. Joaquim Balsells is a specialist in general and digestive surgery at the Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron and doctor "Cum Laude" by the UAB.
He is highly specialized in performing complex surgeries, both open and laparoscopic, of the pancreas, liver and gallbladder. With more than 30 years of experience, he has worked in different centers and hospitals and leads the liver transplant team at Vall d'Hebron Hospital.
Currently, Dr. Balsells is Clinical Chief of the Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplant Service at Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona and Medical Director of the Balsells Surgical Institute at Quirón Barcelona Hospital. He has also worked and trained in some of the best international reference centers in the specialty such as the Presbyterian Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh (USA), the Paul Brousse Hospital (Paris) and the Asan Medical Center Hospital in Seoul (Korea).
As a Fellow of the World Institute for Digestive Endoscopy Research (WIDER), Joaquim Balsells is at the forefront of the latest endoscopic technologies with expertise in Natural Orifice Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) and Single Access Transumbilical Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILS). All these new technologies minimize the risks of surgery, the patient's recovery time and the esthetic effects of the surgery, since they do not leave visible scars.
In his eagerness to improve his training and knowledge every day, Dr. Balsells continues to work in clinical research with more than 380 publications presented at national and international congresses, 57 articles and 190 abstracts in specialized journals. He also teaches at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and is a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, the Spanish Association of Surgeons, the European Society for Organ Transplantation, the Spanish Bilio-pancreatic Club, the European Pancreatic Club and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.
