Dr. Katie Stanton-Maxey is an Acute Care Surgeon at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. She practices elective and emergency general surgery, trauma surgery and surgical critical care at the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center at Eskenazi Health and surgical critical care at the Roudebush Veteran’s Administration Hospital. Her clinical interests lie in surgical palliative care and ethics; she is a member of the Ethics Committee at Eskenazi Health. Dr. Stanton-Maxey is the Director of Surgery Undergraduate Medical Education for the IUSM Department of Surgery and for nearly ten years has managed the required Surgery Clerkship for >360 students per year across 9 campus sites in the state of Indiana, making her an expert in multicampus administration of the surgical clerkship. She directs a comprehensive Preparation for Surgical Internship course based on objectives from the American College of Surgeons/Association of Program Directors in Surgery/Association for Surgical Education Resident Prep Curriculum and directs or oversees several other advanced surgical courses including a Minimally Invasive Surgery course providing education and individual coaching on Fundamentals of Laparoscopic/Endoscopic/Robotic Surgery and a Curriculum Design course that produced a novel medical student curriculum in surgical disparities which has been published and adopted outside the institution. Dr. Stanton-Maxey is passionate about assisting medical students in professional development and advises dozens of students in successfully matching to surgical residencies each year. She has participated in national webinars including the Optimal Strategies for Your Residency Application, focus on General Surgery for AAMC: ERAS The Future in Focus 2024 series.
