Nawwar Al-Attar serves as the specialty advisor for cardiac surgery to the chief medical officer in Scotland. 

Prof. Al-Attar specializes in the surgical management of advanced heart failure and total arterial coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). He is a Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons and a member of the French College of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He held various national and international appointments, including previous Director the Scottish National Heart Failure Service, Chair of the Cardio-Thoracic Transplant Audit Group, member of the Cardio-Thoracic Transplant Advisory Group (NHS BT), and the Scottish Donation and Transplant Group (SDTG). He was also a nucleus member of the Cardiovascular Surgery working group of the European Society of Cardiology. 

His interests include heart failure, transplantation, atrial fibrillation surgery, patient blood management, digital transformation of healthcare, and non-technical surgical skills. 

He has authored over 140 peer-reviewed manuscripts.  He serves as a reviewer for multiple journals and has been either course director or faculty member for training programs in both France and the UK including the Birmingham Review Course, National Virtual Anastomosis surgical skills and advanced echocardiography courses.
