Peter Kronenberg studied Medicine at Justus Liebig University in Giessen (Germany) and at the Faculty of Medical Sciences – NOVA University in Lisbon (Portugal). After one year of residency in Internal Medicine, he decided to become an army doctor in 2006, with appointments at institutions such as Hospital Militar Principal and Hospital das Forças Armadas. He completed his urology residency (2008–2014) at Hospital Prof. Doutor Fernando Fonseca in Amadora (Portugal). He undertook fellowships at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit (USA) with Prof. Edson Pontes in 2010, and at Hôpital Tenon in Paris (France) with Prof. Olivier Traxer in 2012.
He regularly attends international and national scientific meetings and has given numerous presentations in the fields of urological oncology, surgical management of complex cases, female stress urinary incontinence, and particularly laser lithotripsy. He is frequently invited as a faculty member at the most renowned urological meetings, where he delivers state-of-the-art lectures, performs live surgeries, and organizes hands-on training courses in flexible ureterorenoscopy.
Peter Kronenberg has authored book chapters and several first-author articles in renowned urological journals such as The Journal of Urology, BJU International, Urology, World Journal of Urology, Journal of Endourology, and Case Reports in Urology. One of his recent papers, published in The Journal of Urology, is expected to significantly impact the current practice of laser lithotripsy worldwide.
He has repeatedly served as an abstract reviewer for the EAU Congress, particularly for the New Technologies section. He is also a reviewer for several urological journals, including the Journal of Endourology, European Urology, World Journal of Urology, and the Brazilian Journal of Urology. He currently serves on the editorial board of the World Journal of Urology. Since 2024, he has been an Associate Member of the EAU Section of Endourology.
He has received several awards and honorable mentions, including 1st prize at the 12th Workshop of Urological Oncology of the Portuguese EORTC group (2009), 1st prize for Best Podium Presentation and 3rd prize for Best Video Presentation at the 2013 National Congress of the Portuguese Association of Urology. He was also awarded 1st prize for Best Video Presentation at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association, the Clinical Research Award at the 2nd Meeting of the EAU Section of Urolithiasis (EULIS) in 2013, and Best Poster Awards at the 2015 and 2016 Annual EAU Meetings. Additionally, one of his abstracts was selected among the six Best Abstracts out of thousands presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association. In October 2016, one of his articles received the 2015 Article of the Year Award from the World Journal of Urology and the Société Internationale d’Urologie.
Currently, his basic research focuses on the technical aspects of laser lithotripsy. He is actively involved in the development of Super Pulsed Thulium Fiber Laser technology, a breakthrough in the field. He is co-founder and former president of PETRA (Progress in Endourology, Technology and Research Association). He works as a urologist at CUF Descobertas Hospital and lives in Lisbon with his wife, their two children, and a cat.
