Dr. SchMiyah Smith is a General Surgery Resident (PGY-4) in the Howard University General Surgery Residency Program, a well-established surgical training program based in Washington, D.C., and affiliated with Howard University Hospital. As a senior resident, she is undergoing advanced clinical training across the full breadth of general surgery, including acute care, trauma, minimally invasive surgery, and surgical subspecialties. Her responsibilities include the management of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, as well as progressive operative involvement in accordance with the competency-based structure of the program.
Throughout her residency, Dr. Smith has taken part in the rigorous educational curriculum of Howard University’s Department of Surgery, which includes structured didactics, morbidity and mortality conferences, simulation-based skills development, and subspecialty rotations within the hospital network and partner institutions. In her PGY-4 year, she continues to refine her operative judgment and technical abilities while assuming increased leadership responsibilities in patient management and team coordination.
