The recipient of a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and doctor of medicine from Louisiana State University, Dr. Toby Meltzer subsequently completed an internship in general surgery at the school before finishing a four-year residency at the Charity Hospital of Louisiana, where he earned honors as the best fifth-year resident and senior teaching resident. Upon completing another residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Michigan, Dr. Toby Meltzer began working at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU). Through six years with OHSU, Dr. Toby Meltzer performed an average of 150 gender confirmation surgeries per year and produced numerous peer-reviewed articles that appeared in medical journals such as The Journal of Burn Care & Rehabilitation, The Western Journal of Medicine, and Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery. He left OHSU in 1996 to establish his own practice that caters to members of the transgender community and relocated the business to Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2003. He now performs more than 200 genital surgery cases per year, most of which are at the Greenbaum Specialty Hospital. Dr. Meltzer maintains staff privileges at Honor Health Care.
