The main issue discussed in this talk is the main innovative
technologies and controversies in the treatment of rectal cancer over
the last two decades. The main new advances developed over the
last decades include TME and taTME.
Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) is a procedure in which a significant
length of the bowel around the tumor is removed. By contrast,
Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (taTME), is a new minimally
invasive robotic alternative to conventional surgery for patients with
lower rectal cancer.
In this talk, Dr. Ichiro Takemasa points out that he is the first surgeon
1
to perform single-incision lap surgery with D3 dissection for colorectal
cancer. This technique consists in making an incision in your
abdomen to start the operation. This surgery is considered open
surgery, which is a traditional approach as opposed to TME or
TaTME, which are considered minimally invasive and advanced
techniques.
