Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, which represents a major public health issue. About 20% of CRCs are diagnosed with acute obstruction, which is located in the right colon in one third of patients.
Colonic obstruction complicates 10 to 19% of colon cancers.
It is a risk factor for poor prognosis: immediate postoperative mortality ranges from 15 to 30% versus 1 to 5% for elective surgery, and the morbidity rate is twice as high as in an elective setting.
