The laparoscopic surgery represents one of many revolutions in the surgical treatment of colorectal pathologies. It has pushed the boundaries of modern surgery making feasible to maintain the same quality provided by open surgery with several advantages like less pain, less aggression and faster recovery. In terms of colorectal cancer, solid data supports that MIS has similar long term oncologic compared to open surgery. However this approach has some disadvantages such as longer learning curve with long operative time and increased cost. All of them are compensated by surgeon´s experience and savings from a shorter hospital stay and fewer complications. In this lecture Raquel Bravo from the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona will review the scientific data that support the laparoscopic approach for the treatment of colorectal cancer.
