Julio Mayol, medical director at Hospital Clinico San Carlos and Head of the UAI IdI SCC, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, explains the role of social media and big data in the dissemination of surgical knowledge.

Although peer-reviewed papers and oral presentations in surgical conferences have been the main ways of disseminating scientific surgery,  the impossibility of reading all the published data and the limited resources to attend surgical meetings currently hinder the advancement of research. In this context, the rise of social media in the first decade of the 21st century has provided a powerful means to share information.

As only 10% - 20% of clinical decisions are evidence-based and more than 50% of guidelines rely on expert opinion rather than on experimental data, using the information generated from everyday patients is necessary to improve outcomes for our patients and add value using big data.

Dr. Mayol also discusses the use of cognitive training and its applications in surgical teaching.
