The concept of anastomosis is briefly introduced, giving the standard definition of the term and its risk factors (preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative).

Dr. Arulampalam discusses the technologies that can provide safer surgery. ICG technique is described: its basic characteristics, function, applications, and scientific data. Visual help in the form of a video is also provided to better understand the procedure.

Leak prevention is also discussed. Reinforcement, which seeks to seal the anastomosis, is a good prevention technique. Fibrin glue and other sealants are examined, and their basic characteristics, drawbacks, and scientific data explained.

However, prevention is not always possible. Sometimes the patient already has an anastomosis leak, which must be dealt with as it carries a high morbidity rate and a high risk of complications for the patient in the future. Some recommendations to achieve a better procedure and management are given (and a video using the Endo-SPONGE is shown).
