Expansion of surgical services in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) is currently a major need. Surgical disease carries a great morbidity and Mortality. The majority of the world’s population does not currrently have access to surgical care, and 5 billion people lack basic surgical assistance.
Trauma, neoplasms, digestive disorders and childbirth (maternal and neonatal) are some of the main surgical conditions causing a cumulative domestic product lost in LMIC that is expected to increase to trillions of US dollars in the next 10 years.
Geographical access to surgery and well-resourced hospitals is a determinant factor for reducing mortality related to acute abdominal conditions.
