After surgery, the patient's physical transition to the home is a critical time. The feeling of a lack of continuous supervision by specialized teams makes the patient feel vulnerable. Besides, the ability to detect possible complications decreases when the patient is discharged. This means that patients' anxiety increases, that some complications are not identified in the shortest time possible and that some of the visits to the emergency room can be considered unnecessary. If we extrapolate this situation to patients not recently operated, the fact of not having a continuous follow-up, which is unsustainable, has an adverse effect when it comes to the correct adherence to medications.

In recent years, we have seen how technology is gaining more and more strength in the medical-surgical world. Devices, applications, smartphones and other online resources allow the user to obtain information quickly and from anywhere. There are applications focused on the monitoring of surgical patients during the transition home, with daily surveys and direct recommendations. Besides, different comfortable transport devices are being developed to improve the control of patients on a day-to-day basis. Patients affected by morbid obesity represent a group that can benefit especially, due to the significant morbidity they associate. For example, there are shirts, belts, watches and other devices focused on remembering the most appropriate diet, increasing the adherence of medications or controlling blood sugar levels.

In this conference, Dr. Homero Rivas reviews the current situation of digital devices focused on improving patient recovery. Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, and many of the things we dreamt of are beginning to be available.
