The main topic discussed in this SOC is the business of mentorship support for residents. Dr. Wexner explains how leadership skills are closely linked to mentorship support for residents.

He first gives an overview of outstanding surgical leaders, in particular colorectal surgical leaders. Leadership can have several definitions, but it is based on believing in the people in your team and on the ability to translate vision into reality. The key attributes of a great leader are intelligence, empathy, tolerance, open-mindedness, vision, confidence, and social skills.

Bearing in mind what being an effective leader means, there are two types of leadership styles: authoritative and collaborator. Authoritative leaders move people towards a vision, while collaborators emphasize their followers’ participation, values, opinions, and ideas.  Moreover, leaders should modify their style depending on their followers’ needs.

When it comes to organizational leadership, surgery must be autocratic to lead to consensus-driven and academic silos to overlap clinical, academic, and financial duties.

Finally, he emphasizes the surgeon's role in continuous surgical training and education. He also recommends joining organizations and social media.
