Pituitary adenomas are common, with an estimated prevalence of one in five people in post-mortem and radiological studies. These tumours can result in hormone loss or excess, or can compress the optic apparatus resulting in loss of vision. The gold standard treatment for most patients with symptomatic pituitary adenoma is transsphenoidal surgery. Post-operative management is centred on avoidance of post-operative complications and managing pituitary function.
