The two main topics discussed in this SOC are the process of moving to a different institution and the process of taking on a leadership role as a mid-career surgeon. The lecturer aims to explain some tips about the topics and hopes that some learners can take them into practice.

The author provides an overview of the reasons for leaving your current institution:  leadership opportunities, dissatisfaction, promotion, inability to advance a career, and financial incentives. Furthermore, it is also important to have a  ‘package deal’.

Bearing in mind these career advantages, the author discusses the main things to consider when you are going to move. The happiness of your family and the challenges of relocation are key issues during this process. Moreover, it is crucial to keep essential documentation in locations you can keep to hand and to label boxes.

When it comes to pursuing a leadership role, it is important to identify the reason for taking this role and compare the pros and cons in the current position and the future one. It is important to align your goals with the key leaders of the institution and meet with all stakeholders during the interview and recruitment process. It is also essential to identify a leadership coach mentor early in the process.

Finally, he emphasizes succeeding in the leadership role and gives some tips about the issue. Being a listener, transparent, empathetic, and confident are one of the main characteristics of success as a leader. To sum up, a leader recognizes their strengths and understands their limitations individually but also for their team.
