The international guidelines for the treatment of diabetes have been recently updated and include a number of special points focusing on metabolic surgery and the changing landscape for diabetes care.

Bariatric surgery is currently recommended in patients with BMI > 35 Kg/m2 and may be considered in patients with BMI < 35 Kg/m2 with inadequate metabolic control.  In this lecture Philip Schauer explains the data supporting this approach.
