The Scopinaro procedure, the Roux-en-Y gastric Bypass and the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch are classic malabsorptive procedures. They comprise two components: restriction due to reduction of the gastric capacity and a bypass of the biliopancreatic secretions that results in malabsorption. Depending on the small bowel configuration after the surgical remodeling, the procedure may be highly malabsorptive or mildly malabsorptive, which makes them suitable for different types of patient.
In this lecture, Daniel Krawczykowski from the Centre Hospitalier Jean Marcel (Brignoles - France) goes over the literature to review the principles of malabsorptive surgery.
