With the increased popularity of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, the number of patients experiencing weight regain has also increased, which may prompt surgeons to perform conversions to a different bariatric procedure. Conversions to a duodenal switch may be the most preferable approach, and studies have shown the ineffectiveness of conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch has been reported to be the most effective procedure for weight loss and to minimize postoperative weight regain. However, because of its technical complexity and concerns regarding higher operative and metabolic complications, it has not achieved widespread acceptance among patients or bariatric surgeons.
Robotic surgery has appeared as a solution to this problem. Digital platforms are showing great promise as an enabling technology that advances bariatric outcomes. With increasingly complex bariatric cases being performed and revised, the availability of digital information between the surgeon and the patient leads to better operations for the patient and the surgeon.
