Since its emergence nearly 20 years ago, electrothermal bipolar vessel sealing technology is now a mainstay in most modern operating rooms. The goal when refining the technology is to provide an instrument that is able to safely divide tissue and vessels with no injury to the adjacent structures. Recent modifications have additionally sought to allow the surgeon to use the sealing device as a dissector.

The LigaSure™ Maryland jaw combines one-step sealing with the functionality of a Maryland dissector, a traumatic grasper and cold scissors, in addition to the reliability of the LigaSure™ technology.

In this video, Dr. Lacy explains the advantages of this multifunctional instrument during surgery, highlighting its design, which makes it possible to grasp, seal and cut, as well as perform blunt dissection, while providing better visualization thanks to its improved tip.
