Improved understanding of stem-cell and regenerative biology, as well as better control of stem-cell fate, are attracting the attention of the medical community. Stem cell differentiation and the maintenance of self-renewal are intrinsically complex processes that involve the work of hundreds of genes and proteins in precise response to external signalling cues.
In-depth understanding of these processes may lead to the development of treatments for many devastating diseases and injuries such as diabetes, asthma and degenerative neurologic diseases. The Luxembourg centre for systems biomedicine is involved in several European projects targetting these issues, and Antonio del Sol visited the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) to give this lecture which goes from the essentials to future applications of these studies.
