The transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) is now available to the surgical community as the result of constant innovation in order to solve several issues with previous surgical approaches. It can be performed by a single surgical team or through combined and simultaneous dissection by two surgical teams (the Cecil approach).
As an emergent surgical technique, it has become a hot topic among the surgical community. On 4th March Antonio Lacy from the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona took part in a live monthly videoconference to discuss innovations in surgery, which was moderated by Steven Wexner from the Cleveland Clinic in Florida. They had the opportunity to go over the essentials of TaTME and the Cecil approach with other surgeons from London’s Imperial College and IRCAD in France.
Constant discussion, sharing experiences, and proctoring by experts are crucial for constant evolution of innovative techniques.
