Nowadays joint replacement surgery is one of the most successful procedures in all of medicine. It is a safe and effective procedure designed to decrease pain and allow normal activities by correcting anatomical deformities caused by a number of conditions associated with arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis...). More than 600,000 knee replacements are performed each year in the United States.
The video shows the case of a 75-year old woman diagnosed with severe tricompartmental gonarthrosis in the right knee (type III in the Alhbäck classification), with a 5º varus mechanical femorotibial angle. At the moment of the surgery, the patient had a BMI of 33 Kg/m2 and a personal history of anxiety, bipolar disorder and hypothyroidism (ASA II). Intrarachynous anesthesia plus locoregional block. Antibiotical prophylaxis included 2g of Cefazolin ev. The patient is positioned in supine position with a 300 mm Hg ischemia cuff and usual sterile notching. During the video a step-by-step description of the technique is provided: resurfacing of the ends of the femur and tibia, position of the meta implants, resurfacing of the patella and spacer insertion.
