Social determinants of health are important drivers of disparities in surgical care, including access and outcomes. In this AIS webinar, we will be discussing the concept of social responsibility in surgery and its practice as indispensable to addressing and ultimately eliminating disparities in surgical care. We will define social responsibility in the context of surgical care and emphasize the importance and need of having socially responsible surgeons. We will also discuss strategies to teach medical students and surgical trainees why and how to become socially responsible surgeons and several of the current efforts being put forth by the surgical community toward just and equitable care for all populations.
