In this lecture, Dr. Chiappetta focuses on the current role and especially the future prospects of the MGB / OAGB in bariatric surgery. A decade ago, the most performed bariatric procedure was the RYGBP. Nowadays, it has been overtaken by the SG, but the role of the MGB / OAGB is increasingly evolving.
The IDEAL procedure should include aspects such as operation time and perioperative complications, together with long-term outcomes such as weight loss and metabolic impact. From the current evidence it seems that MGB / OAGB is easier and quicker to perform than conventional RYGBP. Moreover, the rate of short-term complications is low, and it may be associated with satisfactory EWL% and diabetes remission at 5 years. Therefore, research on this technique is more than justified.
