Over the past decade, the treatment of ventral and inguinal hernias has seen tremendous growth and advancement in preoperative optimization, surgical techniques, and available options for prosthetic reinforcement. However, appropriate application of all of these innovative concepts can be challenging for the hernia surgeon. In particular, when to perform a "routine" operation on a "routine" hernia, and avoid making things too complicated can be difficult.
